Which UK Company Types Have Which Companies House Data?

Not all data types at Companies House apply to all organisation types.

Some entities are governed by UK company law, while others are registered under separate legal frameworks. As a result, certain datasets are not recorded at all for some company types.

This guide explains which Companies House data exists for which company types, and why.

Key principle

Companies House records data only where legislation requires it.

If an entity is not governed by the Companies Acts, some datasets are:

  • not required
  • not collected
  • or recorded by a different regulator

Charges & mortgages

Charges (also known as mortgages) represent secured lending against company assets.

Available for:

  • Private Limited Companies (LTD)
  • Public Limited Companies (PLC)
  • Community Interest Companies (CIC)
  • Unlimited companies

Not available for:

  • Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs)
  • Registered Societies (including co-operatives)
  • Friendly Societies
  • Royal Charter bodies

Why: Only companies governed by the Companies Acts are required to register charges at Companies House.

Officer resignations

Resignation data exists only where officer appointments exist.

Available for:

  • LTD
  • PLC
  • CIC
  • LLP (members)

Not available for:

  • CIOs
  • Registered Societies
  • Friendly Societies
  • Royal Charter bodies

Why: If an entity does not have "officers" recorded at Companies House, it cannot have recorded resignations.

Insolvency filings

Insolvency data includes:

  • liquidation
  • administration
  • voluntary arrangements
  • receivership

Available for:

  • LTD
  • PLC
  • CIC
  • LLP

Limited or not available for:

  • CIOs
  • Registered Societies
  • Friendly Societies

Important: Some insolvency processes for non-company entities are handled outside Companies House or under different legislation.

Name changes

Name change history is recorded when an entity:

  • is incorporated under Companies House
  • has a legal company name

Available for:

  • LTD
  • PLC
  • CIC
  • LLP

Not available or inconsistent for:

  • CIOs
  • Registered Societies
  • Friendly Societies

Financial / accounts data

Companies House does not publish full financial statements for most companies.

What is typically available:

  • balance-sheet-level data
  • net assets
  • equity
  • accounting period dates
  • accounts type (micro-entity, small, dormant)

Available for:

  • LTD
  • PLC
  • CIC
  • LLP (limited)

Not available for:

  • Registered Societies (often filed elsewhere)
  • Friendly Societies
  • Royal Charter bodies

Important clarification: Turnover and profit are usually not disclosed, even where accounts exist.

Dormancy

Dormancy indicates no significant accounting transactions in a period.

Available for:

  • LTD
  • PLC
  • CIC

Not applicable for:

  • CIOs
  • Registered Societies
  • Friendly Societies

Why: Dormant accounts are a concept defined under UK company accounting rules, which do not apply universally.

What this means when exporting data

If a data type is unavailable for a given company type:

  • the field will be empty by design
  • this does not indicate missing data
  • add-ons may not apply to that entity type

firmlist reflects Companies House data exactly as recorded, without inference or estimation.
